Noisy breathing in cats is not common and usually indicates illness. If your cat's breathing sounds like snoring, they should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your vet can discuss the severity of the symptoms with you and come up with a diagnostic and treatment plan if one is available.
If your cat is making gurgly sounds when they breathe, this could be due to an increase in mucus or fluid somewhere in his respiratory tract. Cats are usually quiet breathers, so any changes in sound like this need to be investigated by a vet.
It usually sounds like a huffing or whistling noise as they inhale or exhale or a slight rattling of the breath. Heavy breathing could also be involved depending on the cause of the wheeze. In terms of posture, your cat may hunch their shoulders and stretch their neck to help elongate their airways.
Signs that your cat's lungs are filled with fluid include: Labored or difficulty breathing with deep, rapid breaths, especially when inhaling. Open-mouth breathing with crackling noises.
Respiratory Infections
If your feline friend has developed a respiratory infection it may be difficult for them to breathe normally. Respiratory infections can lead to heavy breathing or panting in cats. These infections typically begin as viral infections, but often develop into secondary bacterial infections.
Noisy breathing is common in cats. It can result from a variety of conditions, including: an upper respiratory infection, a sinus infection (from dental disease or a nasal foreign body), a tumor in the nose, nasopharyngeal stenosis (a narrowing of the back of the throat) or a nasopharyngeal polyp.
During an asthma attack, your cat may be coughing or hacking. A coughing cat sounds a bit different than a coughing human—it will sound like your cat is trying to pass a hairball.
Breathing rate is an indicator of overall health - if your cat is suddenly breathing fast while sleeping (consistently more than 30 breaths per minute), this could be an early clinical sign of heart-failure. Lower rates may be no cause for concern providing your pet is otherwise behaving normally.
Causes of Noisy Breathing in Cats
Dental disease: Severe dental disease can lead to inflammation of the larynx and even the nasal passages. Neoplasia (cancer): Multiple types of cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, will target the respiratory tract and lead to narrowed airways and noisy breathing.
In the vast majority of cases, disease results from infection with feline calicivirus (FCV) or feline herpes virus (FHV, or FHV-1). Clinical signs include sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the lining of the eyes), ocular discharge, loss of appetite, fever and depression.
