Many experts recommend a level from 20 and 40 ng/mL or 60 and 100 nmol/L. Others recommend a level from 30 to 50 ng/mL (75 to 125 nmol/L). The examples above are common measurements for results of these tests. Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories.
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to many problems within the body and often contributes to symptoms like fatigue, mood disturbances, poor immune function, bone and joint issues, and more. At Root, we believe that ideal levels are between 50-70ng/dl.
Sufficient: 40-80 ng/ml (100-200 nmol/l) High Normal: 80-100 ng/ml (200-250 nmol/l)
Vitamin D deficiency is typically defined as having blood levels below 20 ng/mL, while levels from 21–29 ng/mL are considered insufficient. Most adults should get 1,500–2,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily.
20 nanograms per milliliter or more is probably good enough for most healthy people to maintain overall health. 12 nanograms per milliliter or less is considered deficient.
Safe upper limit: 50 ng/mL, or 125 nmol/L. Toxic: above 50–60 ng/mL, or above 125–150 nmol/L.
A vitamin D deficiency is unlikely to cause weight gain. However, it may cause other health problems or unpleasant symptoms, which are worth avoiding. You can maintain adequate vitamin D levels through a combination of limited sun exposure, a vitamin-D-rich diet, and taking vitamin D supplements.
A vitamin D level of 7 ng/mL is considered severely deficient. Severe deficiency can occur from long-term, inadequate intake of vitamin D, limited exposure to sunlight, poor kidney function resulting in impaired conversion of 25(OH)D, or inadequate vitamin D absorption.
Can vitamin D be harmful? Yes, getting too much vitamin D can be harmful. Very high levels of vitamin D in your blood (greater than 375 nmol/L or 150 ng/mL) can cause nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, confusion, pain, loss of appetite, dehydration, excessive urination and thirst, and kidney stones.
If your levels of vitamin D are low, hair loss can result merely due to an insufficient supply of these cells. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a critical role in maintaining healthy bones, supporting the immune system, and regulating cell growth and division.
