Damage to the amygdala can often be caused by stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological conditions. Individuals with amygdala damage may experience various emotional and behavioral effects such as impaired decision-making, hypervigilance, or anxiety, just to name a few.
Amygdala damage disrupts your ability to feel fear or learn from it. While that might sound like a good thing, fear can be valuable. It's how you learn to spot danger and protect yourself. If you suspect you have damage or a problem affecting your amygdala, you should talk to a healthcare provider.
Fearful stimuli including fearful faces, fear inducing images, and fear conditioned cues, have been found to activate amygdala in several brain imaging studies using positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) [3–5].
The amygdala is a small, almond-shaped structure in the brain. It plays a key role in processing emotion, particularly fear, and studies have linked it to both autism and anxiety. The amygdala (highlighted) is a small almond-shaped structure in the brain involved in processing emotion, especially fear.
Currently, there is no specific treatment targeted solely at repairing or regenerating damaged amygdala tissue after a stroke. However, the treatment for amygdala damage after a stroke primarily focuses on managing associated symptoms and promoting overall recovery.
Indeed, in healthy subjects we found that both citalopram (Murphy et al. 2009) and the atypical antidepressant, mirtazapine (Rawlings et al. 2010), reduced amygdala responses to fear a few hours after administration of single therapeutic dose.
B vitamins help to produce calming neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and GABA. These in turn calm down the emotional centres like the amygdala, and stop it becoming overactive.
Initially, adult neurogenesis was found to occur in only two regions of the brain: the hippocampus and the striatum. But now, mainly through animal studies, there's evidence that new brain cells can also grow in the amygdala, the hypothalamus, the olfactory bulb, and possibly the cerebral cortex.
Conclusions. Chronic physical exercise reduced stress-associated amygdala metabolic activity and broke its association with systemic inflammation in obese women. This study could explain the putative mechanism underlying the health beneficial effect of exercise on CVD via attenuation of stress neurobiology.
The data indicate that the cognitive control of the amygdala via the frontal cortex is dependent on the testosterone levels in a sex-specific manner. Testosterone seems to express sex-specific patterns (1) in networks processing affect and cognition, and (2) in the frontal down-regulation of the amygdala.
