Enteropathic arthritis (EnA) is a type of arthritis that occurs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The condition is also called enteropathic arthropathy. Arthritis is a chronic condition involving swelling and pain in the joints. IBD is chronic inflammation of all or part of your digestive tract.
Diagnosis. A doctor can usually diagnose EA using medical history and physical examinations. They may also order some medical tests to confirm the presence of IBD and arthritis. To confirm a diagnosis of IBD, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, a doctor may use blood tests, stool cultures, or a colonoscopy.
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) causes inflammation, stiffness, and pain in the spine. Enteropathic Arthritis (EnA) causes back and/or joint pain as well as intestinal inflammation associated with conditions such as Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, and undifferentiated colitis.
Symptoms of arthritis include: joint pain (sometimes described as aching, burning or hot) swelling. stiffness and reduced ability to move joints (range of motion)
Although osteoarthritis is more common in older people, many young people in their teens, 20s and 30s can still suffer with the condition. The symptoms are generally the same, no matter how old you are, but it can affect young people differently.
What causes enteropathic arthropathy? Scientists are unsure what causes enteropathic arthritis. They suspect it's related to a protein called HLA-B27 on the outside of white blood cells. The protein can cause your immune system to attack healthy cells in your joints.
Currently, there is no known cure for enteropathic arthritis but there are medications and therapies available to manage the symptoms of both the arthritis and bowel components of the disease.
Spondyloarthropathies (SpA) encompasses a group of chronic, inflammatory autoimmune diseases including ankylosing spondylitis (AS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-related, and reactive arthritis (ReA).
Certain characteristics of these lesions differ from those of rheumatoid arthritis, such as the absence of osteoporosis as well as the presence of neighboring bone proliferation. Occasionally, a damaging granulomatous synovitis linked to Crohn's disease may be observed.
Arthritis is extremely common, especially in people older than 50. It causes joint pain, stiffness and inflammation.
