The Recycled Down we use is a mix of either 600- or 700-fill-power goose and duck down that is reclaimed from cushions, bedding and other used items that can't be resold—the stuff that adds to our growing landfills. By plucking down from the trash, we reduce waste and contribute to the down-recycling stream.
100% of the down we source for our products (except our sleeping bags; learn more about our bags here) is certified to the RDS, and all our down suppliers are certified, too.
Goose Down is considered the highest quality of Down materials. Most premium Down-filled products are made with pure, white goose Down, and come with a price tag to match. While these products can be expensive, they offer a much higher level of luxury than duck Down products.
While both goose and duck down provide excellent warmth, goose down is considered superior due to its larger and stronger down clusters, which make them more resistant to compression. If you leave duck down jackets compressed they can lose 100 fill power points or more.
The virgin down that Patagonia sources for our sleeping bags is traced from parent farm to final fiber processing facility. The percentage of virgin down we source for our sleeping bags that is certified by NSF International to meet the Advanced Global Traceable Down Standard.
Patagonia switches to white geese
“From what we've learned, most of the gray geese are raised for foie gras. Most of them are in Hungary and so that's where the big risk is,” said Wendy Savage, social and environmental responsibility manager for Patagonia. “So currently all our down is white.”
Sustainability at the core of Patagonia's business model
In previous years, Patagonia's sustainability efforts were unmatched, and The North Face stood far behind. However, the latter has recently made a significant shift towards lowering its own ecological footprint.
Using only the highest quality goose down in all of our products, The North Face tests each lot of down at three stages of production for loftiness, moisture resistance and ability to regain loft after compression.
Quality and Warmth
The primary reason goose down is more expensive than duck down is its superior quality and insulation properties. Goose-down clusters are typically larger and fluffier than duck-down clusters.
100% Hungarian goose down is considered the best down filling on the market. Super soft and super fine Hungarian goose down is a high-quality and comfortable bedding filling that provides ultimate heat insulation and lightweight comfort.
