Linux Mint has multiple editions based on Ubuntu, with various desktop environments available. It also has a Debian-based edition.
Linux Mint was born as an Ubuntu derivative, and later added the LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) that is instead based on Debian. On the other hand, Arch is an independent distribution that relies on its own build system and repositories. Mint includes several graphical tools for easier maintenance, called MintTools.
Linux Mint 21.1 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2027. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop experience more comfortable.
Linux Mint is one of the top three Debian derivatives. Although it began as an Ubuntu derivative in 2006, Linux Mint first became prominent in 2011 when it forked Gnome 2 under the name of MATE for users who shied away from Gnome 3.
Debian is the Base for many other Distributions.
Many popular Linux distributions, like Ubuntu, Knoppix, PureOS or Tails, are based on Debian. We provide all the tools so that everyone can extend the software packages from the Debian archive with their own packages if needed.
In the land of Linux, there are two main package managers: RPM and DEB. RPM is used by Red Hat-based distributions such as Fedora and CentOS, while DEB is used by Debian-based distributions such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Both RPM and DEB are used to install, update, and remove software packages on Linux computers.
In general, Linux Mint is perceived to be lighter and faster than Ubuntu, especially in terms of system resource usage and responsiveness. Some users find that Ubuntu may appear to run slower on older or less powerful hardware.
Unlike the Debian distribution, Arch doesn't have different stable and unstable branches. Instead, Arch is a bleeding-edge rolling release: users constantly receive updates and always get the latest features and software.
The most popular version of Linux Mint is the Cinnamon edition. Cinnamon is primarily developed for and by Linux Mint. It is slick, beautiful, and full of new features.
The History of Linux Mint
Linux Mint started in 2006 based on Kubuntu, with name “Ada” as version 1.0. After that another release, “Barbara”, as version 2.0 was first version which used Ubuntu as codebase using its package repositories.
