KDE neon is a Linux distribution developed by KDE based on Ubuntu long-term support (LTS) releases, bundled with a set of additional software repositories containing the latest versions of the Plasma 6 desktop environment/framework, Qt 6 toolkit and other compatible KDE software.
It depends on your use case. I'm perfectly happy with KDE on a 4Gb (bookworm) rpi4 running off an sdcard. It's sluggish (at launching things) but once started, they're fine. Figure it out for yourself.
If you want to use KDE, you don't necessarily need to remove the present Ubuntu and install Kubuntu from scratch. You can install KDE desktop in your current Ubuntu system and switch between the available desktop environments. I'll show you how to install KDE on Ubuntu in this tutorial.
KDE has lot more features. Obviously it will use more ram. If you are ram constrainted, then use xfce of course or try to find out if some services are running which are not needed. Actually a DE should use its free ram for caching things so they launch faster.
KDE provides Linux users a graphical interface to choose their own customized desktop environment. You can choose your Graphical Interface among various available GUI interfaces that have their own look. You can imagine Linux without KDE and GNOME just like DOS in windows.
It's beautiful, fast, and highly configurable. If using KDE Neon stable, you'll want to upgrade as soon as you log in for the first time.
Ubuntu: GNOME generally has lower resource requirements than KDE Plasma. This can be beneficial for users with older or less powerful hardware. Kubuntu: KDE Plasma requires slightly more resources due to its advanced graphical elements and customization options.
It's worth it to try KDE Plasma rather than GNOME. It's lighter and faster than GNOME by a fair margin, and it's far more customizable. GNOME is great for your OS X convert who isn't used to anything being customizable, but KDE is an utter delight for everyone else.
While running KDE Neon, my system consumed about 5.4GB of disk space and 620MB RAM. The CPU was largely idle. In contrast, I find running Cinnamon on Linux Mint requires around 650MB of RAM and Gnome on Ubuntu uses around 1,000MB of RAM.
KDE and Xfce use a small portion of system resources, but Xfce has a shorter loading time and a more lightweight desktop environment. Only Xfce allows you to run numerous applications simultaneously without experiencing performance concerns.
