Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is essential for the growth and functional development of the brain in infants. DHA is also required for maintenance of normal brain function in adults. The inclusion of plentiful DHA in the diet improves learning ability, whereas deficiencies of DHA are associated with deficits in learning.
These organizations typically recommend that adults consume a minimum of 500 mg of EPA and DHA each day, but recognize that higher amounts are often needed for individuals with metabolic risk factors and during specific periods of development, such as pregnancy and infancy.
People who take blood thinners, such as warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix), or aspirin, or people who have hemophilia should check with their doctors for a safe dose. Pregnant women: Ask your doctor if a DHA supplement is right for you, and only use products designed for pregnant women.
To date, there is no official recommended daily allowance for EPA and DHA. However, most health organizations agree that 250–500 mg of combined EPA and DHA is enough for adults to maintain their overall health.
EPA and DHA are essential for proper fetal development and healthy aging (5). DHA is a key component of all cell membranes and is found in abundance in the brain and retina (6).
Of the 2 most important long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, DHA is the more important for proper cell membrane function and is vital to the development of the fetal brain and retina (17).
Several health organizations recommend consuming 250 mg to 500 mg of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) combined per day. This may be from foods or supplements. Dosages of up to 5 g per day are generally considered safe in adults.
Top food sources of DHA
DHA is mainly found in seafood, such as fish, shellfish, and algae. Several types of fish and fish products are excellent sources, providing up to several grams per serving. These include mackerel, salmon, herring, sardines, and caviar ( 16 ).
A small amount of evidence suggests that fish oil containing substantial amounts of EPA and DHA may support hair growth. However, determining whether fish oil can counter hair loss in humans will require more research.
Taking DHA might slow blood clotting. Taking DHA along with medications that also slow blood clotting might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
