Symptoms of derealization include: Feeling that people and your surroundings are not real, like you're living in a movie or a dream. Feeling emotionally disconnected from people you care about, as if you were separated by a glass wall. Surroundings that appear out of their usual shape, or are blurry or colorless.
Derealisation is where you feel the world is unreal. People and things around you may seem "lifeless" or "foggy". You can have depersonalisation or derealisation, or both together. It may last only a few moments or come and go over many years.
Talk therapy
Several types of therapy can work. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can teach you to challenge intrusive thoughts and manage symptoms of depersonalization. Trauma-focused therapy like eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) can help you process traumatic memories.
What is depersonalization-derealization disorder? Depersonalization-derealization disorder (DDD) often shows up with other mental health conditions. It happens when you feel like you're watching your life from outside your body. It can feel like you're watching a movie or a dream. This feeling is very upsetting.
The Structured Clinical Interview for Depersonalization–Derealization Spectrum (SCI-DER) This is a new instrument designed to assess four symptom domains of depersonalization: (1) derealization; (2) somatopsychic depersonalization; (3) autopsychic depersonalization; and (4) affective depersonalization.
Dissociation makes you feel disconnected from yourself and your surroundings. You may also experience gaps in memory, an altered sense of time, or intense flashbacks. Mental health conditions, such as PTSD, panic disorder, and depression can involve dissociation.
Bouts of depersonalization-derealization disorder may last hours, days, weeks or months. In some people, these bouts turn into ongoing feelings of depersonalization or derealization that may get better or worse at times.
Temporary feelings of unreality are a common and natural part of human experience. They're often triggered as a protective mechanism in response to stress, panic attacks, trauma and cannabis.
Anhedonia describes a reduced interest in activities an individual used to enjoy. It's a core symptom of major depressive disorder, but it can also be a symptom of other mental health disorders.
People experiencing depersonalization are fully aware that the distorted sensations and freaky feelings aren't real, which is what makes it so damn scary. The intensity varies from person to person, situation to situation. For me, it was like someone flipped on a “make literally everything weird as hell” switch.
