Toe blisters are fluid-filled pockets on the toes often caused by friction. Other causes include burns, allergies, infections, excessive moisture, and autoimmune skin conditions. Toe blisters should be treated gently to aid with healing. Do not peel or pop blisters as this could lead to a bacterial infection.
Clean a sharp needle with an antiseptic wipe or rubbing alcohol. Use the needle to prick the blister in several spots near the edge. Let the fluid drain but leave the skin above the blister in place. Apply an antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly to the blister and cover it with a nonstick bandage or gauze pad.
To protect your blister from becoming infected, a pharmacist can recommend a plaster or dressing to cover it while it heals. A hydrocolloid dressing (a moist dressing) can protect the blister, help reduce pain and speed up healing.
Most blisters which occur on the soles of feet are caused by excessive friction and moisture and are frequently seen with sporting activities including football, netball, running, hiking and walking.
Most blisters heal naturally after 3 to 7 days and don't need medical attention. It's important to avoid bursting the blister. This could lead to an infection or slow down the healing process. As new skin grows underneath the blister, your body slowly reabsorbs the fluid in the blister.
Use a loose bandage to protect it. Avoid the activity that caused the blister. If a small blister is on a weight-bearing area like the bottom of the foot, protect it with a doughnut-shaped moleskin pad . Leave the area over the blister open.
A friction blister is a small pocket of puffy, raised skin containing clear fluid. It is usually painful when touched. A blister can appear anywhere.
For a Blister That Has Not Popped
Try not to pop or drain it. Leave it uncovered or cover loosely with a bandage. Try not to put pressure on the area. If the blister is in a pressure area such as the bottom of the foot, put a donut-shaped moleskin on it.
About blisters
The feet are particularly prone to blisters. Ill-fitting shoes or friction can damage the skin, and a blister forms to cushion the area from further damage as it heals. If the blister is left unpopped, the body gradually absorbs the fluid as the underlying skin recovers. This can take around one week.
As the wound begins to dry, a crust starts to form in the outer layer. If the crust is yellowish and if there is a formation of pimples on or near the wound, it could be septic. Sores that look like blisters. If there is a formation of sores which look like pockets of fluid around the area, they could be septic.
