A lump under your jaw can be a swollen lymph node. But it may also be an indicator of another health condition, such as a growth or cyst. A lump on your jawline that is soft and can be moved with your fingers is usually not a reason to be concerned and will often go away on its own.
These lymph nodes are located in the head and neck, including under the jaw and chin. When your lymph nodes swell, it usually signals the presence of an infection, such as the cold, flu, ear infection, sinus infection, strep throat, and more. An abscessed tooth can also cause a swollen lymph node.
Many conditions can cause a lump on your jawline, and most aren't serious enough to worry about. Causes include cysts and tumors — but the issue may be as simple as an allergic reaction or a swollen lymph node. It may be helpful to keep in mind that most benign growths feel soft and moveable when you touch them.
Sometimes referred to as muscle knots, TMJ trigger points are tight and sensitive muscles around the jaw. Muscle hypertension can also happen in many other places around the body, leading to pain and stiffness. In the context of TMJ pain, the muscles to look out for are the ones responsible for jaw function.
A torus mandibularis is a noncancerous, bony growth that forms on your lower jaw and sits under your tongue. You may have one growth (torus) or several (tori). They can develop on one side or both sides of your mouth. Mandibular tori aren't dangerous, but they can be uncomfortable and even painful in some instances.
A lump under the chin should go away on its own. In most cases, treating an underlying condition such as an infection will reduce swelling. You should see a doctor if: you have an unexplained chin lump.
What does a cancerous neck lump feel like? Cancerous lymph nodes can occur anywhere on the neck and are typically described as hard rather than squishy like the swollen nodes caused by infection. The lumps can range in size from a half-inch to several inches in diameter.
Mucocele. Mucocele are soft swellings that look like cysts or bubbles and usually occur on the gums or roof of the mouth, inside the lower lip or under the tongue. They are often caused by accidentally biting the lower lip, which damages a salivary gland and causes saliva to build up.
There are many causes of lumps in the neck. The most common lumps or swellings are enlarged lymph nodes. These can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, cancer (malignancy), or other rare causes. Swollen salivary glands under the jaw may be caused by infection or cancer.
The vast majority of these cysts occur in the mandible and they disappear spontaneously by rupturing into the oral cavity. Gingival cysts may also occur in adults, most frequently within the fifth and sixth decades of life and arise from the rest cells of the dental lamina.
