Encephalopathy is a change in how your brain functions. You may feel confused, agitated or not like yourself. It can be a temporary disturbance or it could permanently damage your brain. There are many possible causes of encephalopathy, like an infection or an underlying condition. Treatment depends on the cause.
Encephalopathy from head injuries, toxins, cardiac arrest, or lack of oxygen to the brain causes physical damage to the brain that is usually permanent. That means your mental state may not go back to what it was.
Encephalopathy = altered consciousness lasting for more than 24 hours, including lethargy, irritability or a change in personality or behaviour. Encephalitis = encephalopathy AND evidence of central nervous system (CNS) inflammation, demonstrated by symptoms like fever and seizures.
Metabolic encephalopathy is a change in how your brain works due to an underlying condition. It can cause confusion, memory loss and loss of consciousness. You may make a full recovery if you receive a diagnosis and treatment quickly, but permanent brain damage is possible.
They can be either immediate or delayed onset: Sensory, Voice/speech, Respiratory, Muscular, Dermatological, Neurological, Insomnia, Short-term memory loss, Aphasia, Executive function and self-regulation skills, Syncope/consciousness, Mental clarity/intoxication, Intelligence decline, Headaches/Migraines, Decreased ...
Some people eventually make a full recovery from encephalitis, although this can be a long and frustrating process. Many people never make a full recovery and are left with long-term problems caused by damage to their brain. Common complications include: memory loss (amnesia)
Diagnosing encephalopathy
First, your provider will start with a physical exam and discuss your medical history and medications. A neurological exam will follow to check your brain and nervous system function. Labs and imaging may be ordered to provide insight and rule out any other possible related conditions.
Drug-Related Encephalopathy
Many of the substances that can produce some form of encephalopathy are commonly identified as potential drugs of abuse, including cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, hallucinogens, inhalants, heroin and all other legal or illegal opioid narcotics.
Background Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neuropsychiatric syndrome with a fluctuating course associated with end stage liver disease (ESLD). HE symptoms, which are graded from 0 to IV, range from subtle personality or sleep disturbances to confusion and coma.
Having hepatic encephalopathy makes things more serious. At this stage, most models predict a life expectancy of up to two years. Roughly half of people with both conditions live a full year after diagnosis, and half of those live another full year. But this changes if you have a liver transplant.
