Currently, Turkey has no operating commercial nuclear reactors. However, four VVER-1200 reactors at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, are currently under construction and expected to come online in 2025. The government is aiming for 20 GW of nuclear.
History. In May 2010, Russia and Turkey signed an agreement that a subsidiary of Rosatom — Akkuyu NGS Elektrik Uretim Corp. (APC: Akkuyu Project Company) — would build, own, and operate a power plant at Akkuyu comprising four 1,200 MW VVER units. The agreement was ratified by the Turkish Parliament in July 2010.
Serious nuclear power plant accidents include the Fukushima nuclear disaster (2011), the Chernobyl disaster (1986), the Three Mile Island accident (1979), and the SL-1 accident (1961). Nuclear power accidents can involve loss of life and large monetary costs for remediation work.
Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant in the Republic of Türkiye and currently the largest nuclear construction project in the world. Four power units with the most advanced Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors are being constructed simultaneously.
Nuclear weapons shared by the United States
Under NATO nuclear weapons sharing, the United States has provided nuclear weapons for Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey to deploy and store.
Uranium. Turkey has modest uranium resources. The Temrezli deposit in the central Anatolian region 220 km east of Ankara was discovered by the Department of Energy, Raw Material and Exploration (MTA) in the early 1980s.
Nuclear weapons in Türkiye
Türkiye is one of five members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) to host US nuclear weapons on its territory as part of a nuclear-sharing agreement. The Turkish air force is assigned approximately 20 B61 nuclear bombs, which are deployed at Incirlik Air Base.
Construction has begun on a new nuclear reactor design called Natrium, near a mining town in Kemmerer, Wyoming (USA).
Iran is engaged in nuclear-related activities at more than a dozen locations across the country. Its largest enrichment facility is at Natanz, while its sole nuclear power plant is at Bushehr, on the Persian Gulf coast.
In 2021, on the 35-year anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, fires and radiation persist.
