Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that can blur your central vision. It happens when aging causes damage to the macula — the part of the eye that controls sharp, straight-ahead vision. The macula is part of the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye).
AMD affects the central vision, and with it, the ability to see fine details. In AMD, a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. In advanced stages, people lose their ability to drive, to see faces, and to read smaller print.
Can you live a normal life with macular degeneration? You'll probably need to make some changes and adjustments to make life a bit easier with vision loss, but most people can live independently with AMD.
Dry AMD – there's no treatment, but vision aids can help reduce the effect on your life. Read about living with AMD. Wet AMD – you may need regular eye injections and, very occasionally, a light treatment called photodynamic therapy, to stop your vision getting worse.
Exudative. In this type of detachment, fluid builds up beneath the retina, but there are no holes or tears in the retina. Exudative detachment can be caused by age-related macular degeneration, infection, tumors or inflammatory conditions.
The right eyewear can enhance vision and improve daily life for people with AMD. From magnification and high-powered lenses to anti-glare coatings and prismatic lenses, a variety of eyeglasses options are available. Here are some of the eyeglasses features that may prove helpful for people with AMD.
AMD doesn't cause complete blindness, but losing your central vision can make it harder to see faces, read, drive, or do close-up work like cooking or fixing things around the house. AMD happens very slowly in some people and faster in others. If you have early AMD, you may not notice vision loss for a long time.
Carrot Juice is a great source of beta-carotene that is a vitamin which is one of the most powerful antioxidants! This is as it helps protect the surface of the eye and also helps deter against macular degeneration and cataracts.
Dougherty and colleagues also note that stress may be associated with increased inflammation and that AMD is an inflammatory disease—raising the possibility that stress may contribute to disease progression.
Laser surgery is not a cure for AMD, but it can reduce symptoms. If blood vessels leak again after surgery, a person may need multiple treatments throughout their life.
